(Computer Science/Customer Service).

Chapter One : How To Write Your CV
1-
What
is Resume/Curriculum Vitae (CV)?
- A
resume is a brief document which highlights an individual's experience,
qualifications, and skills, in the hopes of securing a job interview.
- In
some regions of the world, the term “resume” is used interchangeably with
Curriculum Vitae (CV), while in other places, the two terms refer to very
different documents.
- A
resume is a standard inclusion with any job or
internship application, and it may be requested for applicants into graduate
and professional schools as well.
- A
good resume contains basic information about the applicant, organized in a way which
is easy for the reader to comprehend. Clear contact information is usually at
the top, followed by work experience, educational achievements, a list of
skills, relevant certifications or awards, and contact information for
references, though not necessarily in this order.
- The
organization of a resume is a fine art, and it requires some work to create a
strong resume. In some cases, people ask for professional help when assembling
a resume.
2-
How do
I write a professional Resume?
- A
professional resume should be concise. Keep the resume to one or two pages --
if it is longer than two pages, you need to consolidate the information and put
it in a quick and easy-to-read format.
- The
resume should be free of any grammatical or spelling errors. Have someone check
your resume for you, or you can use the automatic spelling/grammar function on
the software you use.
- Most
professionals recommend using "action statements" when writing a
professional resume. This means that when writing descriptions of previous work
you have done, begin the statement with an action word -- such a word might be
"initiated," "developed," "provided," etc.,
depending of course on what you did day to day.
- Describe
the work you did and the positive results of said work. As opposed to simply
writing lists of your responsibilities, action statements demonstrate the
actual work you performed and paint the picture of a more motivated individual.
- As
much as possible, a professional resume should be tailored for the job for which
you are applying. Detail the skills and qualifications you have that you will
bring to the company.
- Remember,
they are not doing you a favor by hiring you. You should be able to clearly
illustrate how you will benefit the company and what specific talents you will
bring to the position.
- Be
sure to include any extra abilities you have, such as the ability to speak a
second language.
- Register
a professional e-mail address for yourself, which should be as close to your
first and last name as possible.
- If
you anticipate potential employers calling your home phone or cell phone, make
sure your voicemail message is equally professional.
- Remember
that creating a professional resume that is neat, clean, concise and
informative is the first indication to your potential employer that you are a
professional person.
- Take
care: If your resume has multiple errors and seems messy or irrelevant, it is
highly unlikely that an employer will still take the time to meet with you in
person.
3-
What
are the contents of a Resume?
Qualifications
- This
first paragraph should provide the employer with a summary of your curriculum
vitae. It should name your best attributes and achievements, without too much
detail. You’ll go into the specifics later on.
- This
section should be no more than a few sentences. It’s the attention grabber, so
list only the qualities and accomplishments that you think this specific
employer is looking for.
Experience
- Here
you will list all your jobs in a chronological format, much as you would on a resume.
You should provide a small description of your duties as well as any major
accomplishments while you held each position.
- Date,
job title, company, duties, accomplishments are all required components of each
entry here.
Other Experience
- List
any experience you may have that was not in a traditional job setting. If you
have conducted research independently, written a book, taught a few classes as
a freelance professor, or any other experience you should include it here.
- Date,
company [if applicable], and a thorough description of each entry should be
included here.
Education &
Honors
- This
section of your curriculum vitae will be very similar to the education
component of a resume. Feel free to elaborate where you feel necessary. Be sure
to include the names of any relevant clubs you participated in, accomplishments
in extra curricular activities, and other achievements. If applicable, you
should include the title of your thesis and optionally a brief description.
- Date,
institution, degree, honors, GPA, thesis, and other important activities.
Industry Involvement
/ Conferences
- This
section is used to describe your ongoing studies and educational activities
after school. If you’ve attended work-related conferences or conventions, list
them here. This lets the employer know you’ve been involved in the industry
beyond the 9-5; if you’ve attended several such events you’re likely to be
abreast of recent changes and news in your industry, networked, and generally
be interested in your profession beyond the paycheck.
- Date
attended (ex. January 3-5, 2004), city/state/(if necessary, country),
conference title and sponsoring organization.
Industry
Contributions / Papers / Projects
- How
have you contributed to your industry? If any of your papers or research has been
published, include it here. If you have volunteered and worked as part of a
team (ex. work for a foundation, think tank, open source software programming,
etc.) include information regarding your specific contributions and level of
involvement.
- If
several of your papers have been published or you’ve contributed to several
projects, you should break this into more than one section.
- Date,
publication or organization, paper title or project, description of your
involvement.
Additional Sections
as necessary
- The
above sections are those most commonly found in a curriculum vitae, and provide
the employer with the information they usually take into consideration. If you
think a particular employer would be interested in another aspect of your life,
and it’s not an inappropriate personal matter, let them know about it.
- If
there’s anything else you feel your employer should know about your experiences
or expertise, include it. Don’t worry about being too long winded if they
wanted a single page summary they would have requested a resume. At the same
time, don’t shoot for a certain number of pages. Only include information that
will give an employer the ability to gauge your abilities and experience.
4-
Which
resume format should I use?
There are 3 main
resume styles. Choose the one most effective in presenting your qualifications:
Chronological
- Most
traditional style and most preferred by employers.
- Best
for those with an impressive work history in their field of interest.
- Effective
for people staying within the same field or climbing the career ladder.
- Useful
for new college graduates.
- Focuses
on employment history and education.
- Experience
and education are listed in reverse chronological order.
Functional
- Viewed
skeptically by some employers preferring a more traditional approach.
- Best
for those who have limited work experience in their field of interest.
- Appropriate
for career changers or frequent job changers.
- Effective
for people returning to the work force with employment gaps.
- Emphasizes
skills developed through academic/volunteer/work experiences.
- Downplays
unrelated work experience, stressing transferable job skills.
- Clusters
one's education, experience, and activities into skill categories.
Combination
- An
increasingly popular choice, preferred over the functional format.
- Effective
for people with widely varied experiences.
- Suitable
when experiences are limited or not clearly related to job objective.
- Used
by new college grads with relevant leadership/internship positions.
- Combines
the elements of the chronological and functional resume types.
- Highlights
marketable skills by summarizing strengths at the beginning.
- Places
vital experiences in reverse chronology, after qualifications summary.

Resume
Writing Detailed Guide
Identifying
Information
-
Your name and contact information
should be clearly visible at the top of the resume. Also, your name and the
page number should be placed at the top of any additional resume pages.
- Your
objective is like the thesis statement of a term paper. It establishes your
viewpoint regarding your career direction and goals. When formulating your
objective, consider these points: "Here's what I want to do, and can do
for an organization, and here's how I'll be an asset to them"
- The
objective can be broken into three parts:
- What
I want to do
describes the type of work you desire and can be as general as "a sales
position", or as specific as "a management position in retail
operations at a major telecommunications company".
- What
I can do illustrates
the things you can do for a company or your job performance strengths, such as
"organize and plan meetings" or "install and maintain
software".
- How
I'll be an asset
states the results that you'll achieve for the employer, such as "improve
productivity" or "ensure good customer relations".
- Examples
of job objectives that combine these three parts might be:
- A
position in management accounting, requiring skills in financial planning,
analysis, and systems operations, where I can contribute to the profitable growth
of an organization.
- A
graphic design position where I can utilize my related education and skills to
meet client needs.
- A
paralegal position at McNeil and Associates, where proven knowledge of real
estate law and practice is needed to meet law firm objectives.
- You
may choose to state your objective, using one or a combination of these parts.
However, most employers prefer to see that you have focused career goals and
targeted interests. Avoid using vague statements like, "A challenging
position in a growing company", as this indicates a lack of career
direction and focuses on what you're hoping the company will do for you.
Remember, employers are more interested in what you can do for them.
- If
you state an objective on your resume, be sure it’s current and concise. If
you’re considering more broad or diverse job options, you may decide to omit
the job objective statement. As an alternative, you may discuss your career
interests in the accompanying cover letter or prepare more than one resume
using different objectives.
- Regardless
of your approach, initially preparing a statement of objective will help
simplify the writing of your resume. Everything on the remainder of your resume
should support your objective. When deciding whether or not to include various
topics or background information, ask yourself, "Does this information
support my objective statement?" and, "Have I prioritized my
qualifications, placing those most relevant to my objective first?"
Education
- Place
your education in the first section of the resume, if it is related to your
objective and has been obtained within the last few years. As your work
experience increases, place education in a subsequent section. List in reverse
chronological order, all college, university, and professional school data.
- Consider
using a section called "Educational Highlights" or "Special
Projects" to describe any relevant research studies or projects developed
through coursework.
- Examples:
- Guidance
Services:
Designed model career development program for eighth graders, utilizing state
comprehensive guidance and counseling guidelines to assess and explore student
career interests.
- Environmental
Biology:
Conducted extensive research on solid waste management; interviewed state,
city, and county representatives; analyzed political elements inherent in
environmental decision making; presented findings to class of 50 in a lecture
and open Debate Format.
Experience
- Use
this section to showcase responsibilities, abilities, transferable skills, and
accomplishments that qualify you for the job. Possible sources of relevant
experiences to consider including are:
- Full-time,
part-time, and summer jobs
- Internships
and Co-ops
- Volunteer
work
- Student
teaching, practicum, and field work experience
- Research
and teaching assistantships
- Study/work/travel
abroad
- Student/community
organizations active participation & leadership roles
- List
experiences in reverse chronological order within categories. You can use
different headings to group related experiences together. Doing so, will allow
you to prioritize your most relevant skills, by putting them in categories
closer to the top of the resume, so they're read first. Examples:
- EXPERIENCE
- PROFESSIONAL
EXPERIENCE
- WORK
HISTORY
- RELATED
EXPERIENCE
- VOLUNTEER
EXPERIENCE or LEADERSHIP ACTIVITIES
- STUDENT
TEACHING, INTERNSHIP, or CO-OPERATIVE EXPERIENCE
- (career
field) EXPERIENCE (i.e. BUSINESS EXPERIENCE, COUNSELING EXPERIENCE)
Professional
Memberships / Civic Activities / Extracurricular Activities
- Employers
seek applicants who are active "doers", being able to balance many
activities
- List
any memberships, leadership, community, & campus activities not mentioned
previously, which serve to distinguish you or support your career
objectives.

Chapter Two : How To Search For Jobs
1-
The
importance of the job searching process:
- With
today’s changing economic climate, there is a need to keep our job-hunting
skills fresh and up to date. Ways of finding employment today have changed from
the way that they were ten years ago. We have more resources at our disposal
and a person who really wants to, can find a job if they use them to their
advantage. Below are ten very effective ways to job-hunt and secure employment
in a very competitive world today. It may seem like there are ten people
waiting to apply for that one job that is listed in the paper or on a job bank,
but if you put all of the tips below to use, you are virtually guaranteed to
find employment.
2-
Job
search methods:
Personal contacts
- Many
jobs are never advertised. People get them by talking to friends, family,
neighbors, acquaintances, teachers, former coworkers, and others who know of an
opening. Be sure to tell people that you are looking for a job because the
people you know may be some of the most effective resources for your search. To
develop new contacts, join student, community, or professional organizations.
School career planning
and placement offices
- High
school and college placement services help their students and alumni find jobs.
Some invite recruiters to use their facilities for interviews or career fairs.
They also may have lists of open jobs. Most also offer career counseling,
career testing, and job search advice. Some have career resource libraries;
host workshops on job search strategy, resume writing, letter writing, and
effective interviewing; critique drafts of resumes; conduct mock interviews;
and sponsor job fairs.
Employers
- Directly
contacting employers is one of the most successful means of job hunting.
Through library and Internet research, develop a list of potential employers in
your desired career field. Then call these employers and check their Web sites
for job openings. Web sites and business directories can tell you how to apply
for a position or whom to contact. Even if no open positions are posted, do not
hesitate to contact the employer: You never know when a job might become
available. Consider asking for an informational interview with people working
in the career you want to learn more about. Ask them how they got started, what
they like and dislike about the work, what type of qualifications are necessary
for the job, and what type of personality succeeds in that position. In
addition to giving you career information, they may be able to put you in
contact with other employers who may be hiring, and they can keep you in mind
if a position opens up.
Classified ads
- The
ads in newspapers and the Internet list numerous jobs, and many people find
work by responding to these ads. But when using classified ads, keep the
following in mind:
- Follow
all leads to find a job; do not rely solely on the classifieds.
- Answer
ads promptly, because openings may be filled quickly, even before the ad stops
appearing in the paper.
- Read
the ads every day, particularly the Sunday edition, which usually includes the
most listings.
- Keep
a record of all ads to which you have responded, including the specific skills,
educational background, and personal qualifications required for the position.
You may want to follow up on your initial inquiry.
Internet resources
- The
Internet includes many job hunting Web sites with job listings. Some job boards
provide National listings of all kinds; others are local. Some relate to a
specific type of work; others are general. To find good prospects, begin with
an Internet search using keywords related to the job you want. Also look for
the Web sites of related professional associations.
- Also
consider checking Internet forums, also called message boards. These are online
discussion groups where anyone may post and read messages. Use forums specific
to your profession or to career-related topics to post questions or messages
and to read about the job searches or career experiences of other people.
Although these message boards may seem helpful, carefully evaluate all advice
before acting; it can be difficult to determine the reliability of information
posted on message boards.
- In
online job databases, remember that job listings may be posted by field or
discipline, so begin your search using keywords. Many Web sites allow job
seekers to post their resumes online for free.
Job fairs
- Job
fairs are becoming a more common method of entry and mid level recruiting and
initial screening. For the corporate recruiter, they offer an opportunity to
reach interviewing terminal velocity the highest possible number of prospects
in the shortest possible amount of time. For many students, job fairs provide a
freebie opportunity to meet with multiple employers in the same day.
Professional
associations
- Many
professions have associations that offer employment information, including
career planning, educational programs, job listings, and job placement.
Information can be obtained directly from most professional associations
through the Internet, by telephone, or by mail. Associations usually require
that you be a member to use these services.
Labor unions
- Labor
unions provide various employment services to members and potential members,
including apprenticeship programs that teach a specific trade or skill. Contact
the appropriate labor union or State apprenticeship council for more
information.
Community agencies
- Many
nonprofit organizations, including religious institutions and vocational
rehabilitation agencies, offer counseling, career development, and job
placement services, generally targeted to a particular group, such as women,
youths, minorities, ex-offenders, or older workers.
Private employment
agencies and career consultants
- Private
agencies can save you time and they will contact employers who otherwise might
be difficult to locate. Such agencies may be called recruiters, head hunters,
or employment placement agencies. These agencies may charge for their services.
Most operate on a commission basis, charging a percentage of the first-year
salary paid to a successful applicant. You or the hiring company will pay the
fee. Find out the exact cost and who is responsible for paying associated fees
before using the service. When determining if the service is worth the cost,
consider any guarantees that the agency offers.
Internships
- Many
people find jobs with business and organizations with whom they have interned
or volunteered. Look for internships and volunteer opportunities on job boards,
school career centers, and company and association Web sites, but also check
community service organizations and volunteer opportunity databases. Some
internships and long-term volunteer positions come with stipends and all
provide experience and the chance to meet employers and other good networking
contacts.
Chapter Three : Getting Ready For An
Interview
1-
How
can I get ready for the interview?
- Getting
ready for the interview is very important to carry out preliminary
investigation. You have to collect as much information about the company you
are going for the interview and people you are going to meet.
- All
the necessary information you may get using different ways. If you want to work
in a big enterprise you have to get to know the services and production of the
enterprise. Most companies promote itself spreading colorful leaflets and
brochures about their work. It can be useful to find the articles about the
company in magazines or newspapers.
-
You may talk to a person who works
for the company or worked in it. He may tell you a great number of interesting
details, but you have to take into account the subjective point of view of the
narrator. Probably the consultant of the agency may answer some of your
questions.
- Information
that you should know about the company you want to work for:
- What
production and services does the company offer to the customers?
- Who
are the customers and where the production is sold?
- How
many years does the company exist?
- Has
the company changed its initial strategy?
- Is
the board of directors stable or it changes very often?
- What
is the legal status of the company?
- Did
the company make the attempt to absorb other companies?
- Did
the company get a profit last year or last three years?
- How
many people were fired the last year? Or three years and why?
- Does
the mass media pays much attention to the company and why?
- What
are the responses of mass media?
- What
is the attitude towards the staff of the company?
What new projects does the company work on?
What new projects does the company work on?
- Does
the company based on the organizations on the territory of the
country or have the partners abroad?
country or have the partners abroad?
- What
are the perspectives of the field which is the company based on?
- The
day before the interview rehearse to answer all possible questions.
- Ask
your friend to help you.
- Be
opened for the critics.
- Try
to sound confident but not too self-confident. The hour before the interview
look
through your CV, and refresh in your memory all your successes and experience connected with your professional life.
through your CV, and refresh in your memory all your successes and experience connected with your professional life.
- Half
an hour before the interview make a deep breath and say that I have been even
in bigger troubles. You will have lots of interviews during your life. Prove
your ability to keep calm and composure in every situation.
- Five
minutes before the interview try to recite you favorite poem or the letter from
your
best friend, it will help you to concentrate on the subject of the interview.
best friend, it will help you to concentrate on the subject of the interview.
- During
the interview think about positive sides of your life.
- Remind
yourself about the successful work and getting the position you have dreamt
about.
- Dress
for the interview and the job. Don't overdress or look too informal.
- Have
pen, notepad, extra copy of your resume (business cards if you normally use
them) available where you can find them fast without fumbling through pockets
or purse.
- Always
go to the interview alone. Arrange for baby sitters, transportation, and other pitfalls
ahead of time so that you can be on time and relaxed in the interview.
2-
What
are the types of the interviews?
-
All job interviews have
the same objective, but employers reach that objective in a variety of ways.
You might enter the room expecting to tell stories about your professional
successes and instead find yourself selling the interviewer a bridge or editing
code at a computer. One strategy for performing your best during an interview
is to know the rules of the particular game you are playing when you walk
through the door.
The Screening
Interview
- Companies use screening tools to ensure that candidates meet
minimum qualification requirements. Computer programs are among the tools used
to weed out unqualified candidates. (This is why you need a digital resume that
is screening-friendly. See our resume center for help.) Sometimes human
professionals are the gatekeepers. Screening interviewers often have honed
skills to determine whether there is anything that might disqualify you for the
position. Remember-they do not need to know whether you are the best fit for
the position, only whether you are not a match. For this reason, screeners tend
to dig for dirt. Screeners will hone in on gaps in your employment history or
pieces of information that look inconsistent. They also will want to know from
the outset whether you will be too expensive for the company.
- Some tips for maintaining confidence during screening interviews:
- Highlight
your accomplishments and qualifications.
- Get
into the straightforward groove. Personality is not as important to the
screener as verifying your qualifications. Answer questions directly and
succinctly. Save your winning personality for the person making hiring
decisions!
- Be
tactful about addressing income requirements. Give a range, and try to avoid
giving specifics by replying, "I would be willing to consider your best
offer."
- If
the interview is conducted by phone, it is helpful to have note cards with your
vital information sitting next to the phone. That way, whether the interviewer
catches you sleeping or vacuuming the floor, you will be able to switch
gears quickly.
The Informational
Interview
- On the opposite end of the stress spectrum from screening
interviews is the informational interview. A meeting that you initiate, the
informational interview is underutilized by job-seekers who might otherwise
consider themselves savvy to the merits of networking. Job seekers ostensibly
secure informational meetings in order to seek the advice of someone in their
current or desired field as well as to gain further references to people who
can lend insight. Employers that like to stay apprised of available talent even
when they do not have current job openings, are often open to informational
interviews, especially if they like to share their knowledge, feel flattered by
your interest, or esteem the mutual friend that connected you to them. During
an informational interview, the jobseeker and employer exchange information and
get to know one another better without reference to a specific job
opening.
- This takes off some of the performance pressure, but be
intentional nonetheless:
- Come
prepared with thoughtful questions about the field and the company.
- Gain
references to other people and make sure that the interviewer would be comfortable
if you contact other people and use his or her name.
- Give
the interviewer your card, contact information and resume.
- Write
a thank you note to the interviewer.
The Directive Style
- In this style of interview, the interviewer has a clear agenda that
he or she follows unflinchingly. Sometimes companies use this rigid format to
ensure parity between interviews; when interviewers ask each candidate the same
series of questions, they can more readily compare the results. Directive
interviewers rely upon their own questions and methods to tease from you what
they wish to know. You might feel like you are being steam-rolled, or you might
find the conversation develops naturally. Their style does not necessarily mean
that they have dominance issues, although you should keep an eye open for these
if the interviewer would be your supervisor.
- Either way, remember:
- Flex
with the interviewer, following his or her lead.
- Do
not relinquish complete control of the interview. If the interviewer does not
ask you for information that you think is important to proving your superiority
as a candidate, politely interject it.
The Meandering Style
- This interview type, usually used by inexperienced interviewers,
relies on you to lead the discussion. It might begin with a statement like
"tell me about yourself," which you can use to your advantage. The
interviewer might ask you another broad, open-ended question before falling
into silence. This interview style allows you tactfully to guide the discussion
in a way that best serves you.
- The following strategies, which are helpful for any interview, are
particularly important when interviewers use a non-directive approach:
- Come
to the interview prepared with highlights and anecdotes of your skills,
qualities and experiences. Do not rely on the interviewer to spark your
memory-jot down some notes that you can reference throughout the interview.
- Remain
alert to the interviewer. Even if you feel like you can take the driver's seat
and go in any direction you wish, remain respectful of the interviewer's role.
If he or she becomes more directive during the interview, adjust.
- Ask
well-placed questions. Although the open format allows you significantly to
shape the interview, running with your own agenda and dominating the
conversation means that you run the risk of missing important information about
the company and its needs.
- Astounding as this is, the Greek hazing system has made its way
into professional interviews. Either employers view the stress interview as a
legitimate way of determining candidates' aptness for a position or someone has
latent maniacal tendencies. You might be held in the waiting room for an hour
before the interviewer greets you. You might face long silences or cold stares.
The interviewer might openly challenge your believes or judgment. You might be
called upon to perform an impossible task on the fly-like convincing the
interviewer to exchange shoes with you. Insults and miscommunication are
common. All this is designed to see whether you have the mettle to withstand
the company culture, the clients or other potential stress.
- Besides wearing a strong anti-perspirant, you will do well to:
- Remember
that this is a game. It is not personal. View it as the surreal interaction
that it is.
- Prepare
and memorize your main message before walking through the door. If you are
flustered, you will better maintain clarity of mind if you do not have to wing
your responses.
- Even
if the interviewer is rude, remain calm and tactful.
- Go
into the interview relaxed and rested. If you go into it feeling stressed, you
will have a more difficult time keeping a cool perspective.
- Many companies increasingly rely on behavior interviews since they
use your previous behavior to indicate your future performance. In these
interviews, employers use standardized methods to mine information relevant to
your competency in a particular area or position. Depending upon the
responsibilities of the job and the working environment, you might be asked to
describe a time that required problem-solving skills, adaptability, leadership,
conflict resolution, multi-tasking, initiative or stress management. You will
be asked how you dealt with the situations.
- Your responses require not only reflection, but also organization.
To maximize your responses in the behavioral format:
- Anticipate
the transferable skills and personal qualities that are required for the job.
- Review
your resume. Any of the qualities and skills you have included in your resume
are fair game for an interviewer to press.
- Reflect
on your own professional, volunteer, educational and personal experience to
develop brief stories that highlight these skills and qualities in you. You
should have a story for each of the competencies on your resume as well as
those you anticipate the job requires.
- Prepare
stories by identifying the context, logically highlighting your actions in the
situation, and identifying the results of your actions. Keep your responses
concise and present them in less than two minutes.
The Audition
- For some positions, such as computer programmers or trainers,
companies want to see you in action before they make their decision. For this
reason, they might take you through a simulation or brief exercise in order to
evaluate your skills. An audition can be enormously useful to you as well,
since it allows you to demonstrate your abilities in interactive ways that are
likely familiar to you. The simulations and exercises should also give you a
simplified sense of what the job would be like. If you sense that other
candidates have an edge on you in terms of experience or other qualifications,
requesting an audition can help level the playing field.
- To maximize on auditions, remember to:
- Clearly
understand the instructions and expectations for the exercise. Communication is
half the battle in real life, and you should demonstrate to the prospective
employer that you make the effort to do things right the first time by
minimizing confusion.
- Treat
the situation as if you are a professional with responsibility for the task
laid before you. Take ownership of your work.
- Brush
up on your skills before an interview if you think they might be tested.
The Group Interview
- Interviewing simultaneously with other candidates can be
disconcerting, but it provides the company with a sense of your leadership
potential and style. The group interview helps the company get a glimpse of how
you interact with peers-are you timid or bossy, are you attentive or do you
seek attention, do others turn to you instinctively, or do you compete for
authority? The interviewer also wants to view what your tools of persuasion
are: do you use argumentation and careful reasoning to gain support or do you
divide and conquer? The interviewer might call on you to discuss an issue with
the other candidates, solve a problem collectively, or discuss your peculiar
qualifications in front of the other candidates.
- This environment might seem overwhelming or hard to control, but
there are a few tips that will help you navigate the group interview
successfully:
- Observe
to determine the dynamics the interviewer establishes and try to discern the
rules of the game. If you are unsure of what is expected from you, ask for
clarification from the interviewer.
- Treat
others with respect while exerting influence over others.
- Avoid
overt power conflicts, which will make you look uncooperative and immature.
- Keep
an eye on the interviewer throughout the process so that you do not miss
important cues.
- Expecting to meet with Ms. Glenn, you might find yourself in a
room with four other people: Ms. Glenn, two of her staff, and the Sales
Director. Companies often want to gain the insights of various people when
interviewing candidates. This method of interviewing is often attractive for
companies that rely heavily on team cooperation. Not only does the company want
to know whether your skills balance that of the company, but also whether you
can get along with the other workers. In some companies, multiple people will
interview you simultaneously. In other companies, you will proceed through a
series of one-on-one interviews.
- Some helpful tips for maximizing on this interview format:
- Treat
each person as an important individual. Gain each person's business card at the
beginning of the meeting, if possible, and refer to each person by name.
- If
there are several people in the room at once, you might wish to scribble down
their names on a sheet of paper according to where each is sitting. Make eye
contact with each person and speak directly to the person asking each question.
- Use
the opportunity to gain as much information about the company as you can. Just
as each interviewer has a different function in the company, they each have a
unique perspective. When asking questions, be sensitive not to place anyone in
a position that invites him to compromise confidentiality or loyalty.
- Bring
at least double the anecdotes and sound-bites to the interview as you would for
a traditional one-on-one interview. Be ready to illustrate your main message in
a variety of ways to a variety of people.
- Prepare
psychologically to expend more energy and be more alert than you would in a
one-on-one interview. Stay focused and adjustable.
The Mealtime
Interview
- For many, interviewing over a meal sounds like a professional and
digestive catastrophe in the making. If you have difficulty chewing gum while
walking, this could be a challenge. With some preparation and psychological
readjustment, you can enjoy the process. Meals often have a cementing social
effect-breaking bread together tends to facilitate deals, marriages,
friendships, and religious communion. Mealtime interviews rely on this logic,
and expand it.
- Particularly when your job requires interpersonal acuity,
companies want to know what you are like in a social setting. Are you relaxed
and charming or awkward and evasive? Companies want to observe not only how you
handle a fork, but also how you treat your host, any other guests, and the
serving staff.
- Some basic social tips help ease the complexity of mixing food
with business:
- Take cues from your interviewer, remembering that you are the
guest. Do not sit down
until your host does. Order something slightly less extravagant than your
interviewer. If he badly wants you to try a particular dish, oblige him. If he
recommends an appetizer to you, he likely intends to order one himself. Do not
begin eating until he does. If he orders coffee and dessert, do not leave him
eating alone.
- If
your interviewer wants to talk business, do so. If she and the other guests
discuss their upcoming travel plans or their families, do not launch into
business.
- Try
to set aside dietary restrictions and preferences. Remember, the interviewer is
your host. It is rude to be finicky unless you absolutely must. If you must, be
as tactful as you can. Avoid phrases like: "I do not eat mammals," or
"Shrimp makes my eyes swell and water."
- Choose
manageable food items, if possible. Avoid barbeque ribs and spaghetti.
- Find
a discrete way to check your teeth after eating. Excuse yourself from the table
for a moment.
- Practice
eating and discussing something important simultaneously.
- Thank
your interviewer for the meal.
The Follow-up
Interview
- Companies bring candidates back for second and sometimes third or
fourth interviews for a number of reasons. Sometimes they just want to confirm
that you are the amazing worker they first thought you to be. Sometimes they are
having difficulty deciding between a short-list of candidates. Other times, the
interviewer's supervisor or other decision makers in the company want to gain a
sense of you before signing a hiring decision.
- The second interview could go in a variety of directions, and you
must prepare for each of them. When meeting with the same person again, you do
not need to be as assertive in your communication of your skills. You can focus
on cementing rapport, understanding where the company is going and how your skills
mesh with the company vision and culture. Still, the interviewer should view
you as the answer to their needs. You might find yourself negotiating a
compensation package. Alternatively, you might find that you are starting from
the beginning with a new person.
- Some tips for managing second interviews:
- Be
confident. Accentuate what you have to offer and your interest in the position.
- Probe
tactfully to discover more information about the internal company dynamics and
culture.
- Walk
through the front door with a plan for negotiating a salary.
- Be
prepared for anything: to relax with an employer or to address the company's
qualms about you.
3-
What
are the most common Interview questions?
Interview Questions:
Work History
- Name
of company, position title and description, dates of employment.
- What
were your expectations for the job and to what extent were they met?
- What

Samples
of some interview questions and their answers:
Common Questions:
- "Tell
me a little about yourself."
- When
responding to this request, you should focus on both your personal and
professional values. Always be honest, but talk about your best traits only,
especially those that relate to the position for which you are applying.
Highlight experiences and accomplishments you are most proud of. Here's an
example:
"I'm
an experienced communications specialist with extensive knowledge of public
information tools and techniques. I've developed comprehensive communication
plans for major public events, written dozens of articles accepted by worldwide
publications, and created specialized educational programs for adults and
students. I am always eager to learn new methods and procedures, and have
implemented continuous improvement techniques in my past positions that saved
money and increased productivity. I like working with people and enjoy group
projects, but am also a self-starter who doesn't mind working on my own. I'm a
volunteer with the local chapter of Special Olympics and enjoy participating in
community events. My goals are to complete my Master's Degree and broaden my
experiences with community relations."
- Remember
to tailor your response to the specific job. By studying the job announcement,
you'll get a good idea of the skills and experience being sought. Work those
into your response.
- Consider
this your own personal commercial. If the interview consisted of only this ONE
chance to sell yourself, what would you say?
- "What
do you feel has been your greatest work-related accomplishment?"
- Choose
one example from your past that was important to you and helped the company you
worked for. Give specific details about what you did, how you did it, and what
the results were. Try to pick an accomplishment that relates to the position
for which you are applying. Employers like to hear about accomplishments that
reduced expenses, raised revenues, solved problems or enhanced a company's
reputation.
- "What
is your greatest strength?"
- This
is a great chance to highlight your best skills. Don't pick just one, focus on your
top three or four. Some examples are: leadership skills, team-building skills,
and organizational skills. Determine which strengths would fit best with the
position for which you are applying. For example, if the job announcement
stresses the ability to handle multiple tasks, you could say: "I'm good at
organizational skills, prioritization and time management. But my greatest
strength is my ability to effectively handle multiple projects and
deadlines."
- "What
is your greatest weakness?"
- Be
careful with this one. Most interview guides will tell you to answer it with a
positive trait disguised as a weakness. For example, "I tend to expect
others to work as hard as I do," or "I'm a bit of a
perfectionist." Interviewers have heard these "canned" answers over
and over again. To stand out, be more original and state a true weakness, but
then emphasize what you've done to overcome it. For example: "I've had
trouble delegating duties to others because I felt I could do things better
myself. This has sometimes backfired because I'd end up with more than I could
handle and the quality of my work would suffer. But I've taken courses in time
management and learned effective delegation techniques, and I feel I've
overcome this weakness."
- IMPORTANT:
Be sure the weakness you talk about is NOT a key element of the position!
- "How
do you handle stressful situations?"
- Give
some examples of stressful situations you've dealt with in the past. Tell how
you use time management, problem-solving or decision-making skills to reduce
stress. For example, tell them that making a "to-do" list helps. Site
stress-reducing techniques such as stretching and taking a break. Don't be
afraid to admit that you will ask for assistance if you are feeling
overwhelmed.
- If
it's true, say you actually work better under pressure.
- "What
is the toughest problem you've had to face, and how did you overcome it?"
- Try
to make this about a problem that faced your company and not just you or your
particular work group. The bigger the problem, the better. Give specific
examples of the skills and techniques you used to resolve this problem.
Emphasize the successful results. Be generous in sharing credit if it was a
team effort, but be sure to highlight your specific role.
- "Have
you ever had to discipline a problem employee? If so, how did you handle it?"
- This
is a likely question if the position for which you are applying requires
supervisory duties. Explain how you used problem-solving skills, listening
skills, and coaching skills to help the employee. If those techniques turned
the employee around, be sure to say so. If those techniques failed, tell how
you followed the company's policies and what the end result was.
- "Why
do you want this position?"
- Here's
where your research about the company will help you stand out among the other
candidates. Explain how you've always wanted the opportunity to work with a
company that... provides a vital public service, leads the industry in
innovative products, whatever... find something specific about that company that
you can tie in with your answer. Explain how your qualifications and goals
complement the company's mission, vision and values (use specific examples). If
you are applying for a position in a company for which you already work,
explain how you'll be able to apply and expand on the knowledge and experience
you've gained from your current position, and will be able to increase your
contributions and value to the company through your new responsibilities.
- "Why
are you the best person for this job?"
- As
with all other questions, be confident and enthusiastic when you answer this.
Don't try to say you are the best qualified person, because you don't know the
qualifications of the other applicants. Instead, emphasize several reasons why
you should be hired. For example: "I've got extensive experience in [name
the appropriate field] and have the specific skills you are looking for. I'm a
fast learner who adapts quickly to change and will hit the ground running. I'm
dedicated and enthusiastic about helping your company meet its goals, and will
provide top-quality results with minimal oversight. I'm an outstanding
performer who takes pride in my work. You won't have any regrets when you hire
me."
Unexpected Questions
- Interview
questions and answers can only be predicted and prepared for to a certain
extent. There are endless variations and no way to know every question in
advance. But that doesn't matter. Because you know there will be unexpected
questions, you will not cringe or freak out when they pop up, as some
applicants will. Instead, you will turn them into opportunities to shine even
more brightly.
- No
one knows you better than you. Memorize a list of your best features, your best
selling points. Use every opportunity and unexpected question to mention these.
- Realize
that sometimes what you say isn't as important as how you say it. Be confident,
enthusiastic, and remember to smile often.
Questions You Should
Ask
- Often
the interviewer's last question is, "Do you have any questions for
me?" Candidates who do not have questions show a lack of initiative and
give the impression that they have minimal interest in the position. Stand out
from those lazy job seekers by asking questions!
- Have
your questions ready in advance. Relate them to the company or its accomplishments/challenges
(your research of the company will show and further impress the interviewer).
Don't ask any question that shows that you have not done your research about
the company.
- Do
not ask questions related to you, such as "When will I be eligible for my
first raise?" or "How often will I be subjected to a performance
review?" Don't bring up money. (You can do that after you are offered the
job.)
- In
addition to specific questions you develop based on what the company does, here
are some sample generic questions:
- "What
do you enjoy most about working here?"
- Be
sure the person you ask actually works for the company. Some organizations,
especially public agencies, have interview panels in which employees from other
agencies participate.
- "Is
there anything I've mentioned that makes you think I'm not the best candidate
for this job?"
- If
they do mention something that's bothering them about you, such as lack of
specific experience, this gives you a last-ditch effort to change their opinion
about you. If you've thought about your possible weaknesses in advance, you
should have a prepared answer to those weaknesses. For example, "I know I
have limited experience in this field, but what I lack in specific experience I
make up for in enthusiasm and desire to excel. I'm a fast learner and I'll work
harder than anyone else to be a top producer on your team."
- "When
do you expect to make your final decision?"
- Be
sure to ask that! Failure to do so may give the impression that you're not that
interested, and you need to know when to follow up.
